Filed an Extension and Have Not Started? The Books Come First

September 4, 2026

If you filed an extension and have not looked at it since, you are in ordinary company. The federal individual income tax extension deadline is Thursday, October 15, 2026, and early September is when the extra months stop feeling like extra months. Here is what the extension changed, what it did not, and the order things need to happen in from here.

What the extension did, and did not, change

Why the books have to be current first

This is why we describe our tax layer the way we do: tax preparation, audit compliance, and clean records, with no surprises and no scrambles. They sit together inside a single engagement. The records are what make the preparation quiet. Skip them and the return turns into an archaeology project, with a preparer asking for things nobody can produce.

What to gather now

  • Access to the bank accounts, the payroll system, billing and the books. Confirm you can actually log in today, not that someone once could.
  • Last year's tax return and the most recent financial statements you have.
  • The next tax deadline and the next payroll date, written down, so the order of work is set by the calendar rather than by whichever email arrived last.
  • Every account reconciled through the period the return covers, and the supporting detail behind anything unusual.

If those four things are in hand, a preparer can start. If any of them are not, that is where the work is, and it is better to know now than in the second week of October.

If the records are behind

The same principle holds for a nonprofit with audit fieldwork on the calendar. A date that is not moving does not make the cleanup optional. It sets the order.

How it starts

If it is a fit, we often suggest a 30 day assessment period at no fee, so we can learn how your world is wired and start stabilizing things. What that month produces, a clear picture of where things stand and what needs attention first, is yours whether or not you continue. With the deadline about six weeks out, the arithmetic is simple. The sooner the books are seen, the more of that window is spent preparing a return instead of reconstructing the year underneath it.

Start with a conversation. October 15 is not moving, and the books are where the work begins.
